The mortality rate among patients with steroid refractory severe acute GVHD (grades 3-4) is over 80%. In a Phase 2 study conducted by Talent Biotechs, ten patients with severe acute GVHD and refractory to standard treatments with high-dose steroids were administered daily doses of CBD for up to three months. Nine out of ten responded to treatment, most of them achieving complete response, and the rest near complete response. Concomitant administration of ulcerogenic drugs such as indomethacin during corticosteroid therapy may increase the risk of GI ulceration. The only available evidence substantiating the choice of the glucocorticoid preparation originates from long-term studies of human patients with HA. In long-term patients, superiority of oral hydrocortisone over prednisolone in terms of mortality, cardiometabolic changes, and bone density, has been shown in several studies (21–24). Moreover, hydrocortisone is less potent and generally has fewer adverse effects than other synthetic glucocorticoids, and post-dosage levels can be easily measured in urine or saliva and the dosage adjusted accordingly .

If you’re taking a high dose of steroids, or you’re taking steroids long-term or repeatedly during pregnancy, your baby may be at an increased risk of intrauterine growth retardation – this is when a baby grows more slowly in the womb. The renal clearance of salicylates is increased by corticosteroids and steroid withdrawal may result in salicylate intoxication.
