Can You Drink Alcohol While Taking Acne Medication?

accutaneHester’s dermatologist talked to her about the chances of isotretinoin not working or the acne returning. Devan’s been on isotretinoin for longer than usual because his acne didn’t respond as expected. Dermatologist, however, rely on evidence-based medicine. We rely on studies that are randomised, placebo-controlled and double-blinded and there is no evidence in our medical literature that it can cause infertility. So it’s like all other diseases, some patients have mild diseases, some have severe diseases. But there’s no test to say, who gets what, and it can progress of course but it doesn’t have to.
I am currently almost positive this was the result of taking accutane. No where did it say this was a possible side effect and the dermatologists’ have tried to reassure me that this is not caused by accutane, but by stress. I know that’s not possible because I was actually not very stressed at all when this drug was finished. My acne was gone and in fact I was feeling quite well to be done with accutane. It’s to my knowledge that there is definitely a correlation between accutane and psoriasis and accutane may actually be a factor in causing psoriasis. Or, at least provide people with the knowledge that this drug can actually cause psoriasis in patients who take it.
It’s best to get that appointment booked sooner rather than later and be open about how your skin is making you feel. If you’re struggling or feel that accutane is negatively affecting your mental health (it’s a possible side-effect), please seek help from your friends, family or GP. Plus, if you just need a bit of a pep talk from someone who’s been through it too, I’m only an Instagram DM away. I bought a huge 2 litre water bottle and tried to get through at least one, but ideally 2, of them everyday. It sounds like a lot, but you get used to it quickly and it’ll help to minimise that dreaded dry skin side effect.
When it comes to treating acne, there’s no one-size-fits-all remedy. What may work for one person, may be no help whatsoever for another. This is why acne treatment often involves some degree of trial and error before finding a medication that’s right for you. In certain cases, after discussion with your Dermatologist, it may be possible to opt-out of the requirement for contraception. However, monthly appointments and pregnancy tests will still be required, and prescriptions will be limited to 30 days.
A course of treatment generally lasts around five months, but we may need to be prolong it by a few months in cases where the skin has not fully cleared or where we have used lower doses. You may also find yourself lacking in confidence or feeling quite self-conscious and sometimes low about your skin. It may be that your child’s skin is having a significant impact on their confidence. Often my patients tell me that they are reluctant to leave the house or that they are intentionally limiting their social activities because they are worried about what people will think of their skin.
When you’re a teenager, taking Accutane is so commonplace it’s dull. When you’re old enough to be making regular 401 contributions and you still have to beg your dermatologist for a hit of the good stuff, it’s depressing. I went through two more rounds of Accutane, when I was 19 and 22, with roughly the same results.
